Research Fellowship

Introduced to foster academic and professional development in the Canadian immigration sector.

Research Fellowship

In July 2024, the College launched a Research Fellowship in collaboration with Toronto Metropolitan University to advance industry studies on evidence-based regulation and public protection.

The Research Fellowship supports the College’s purpose to regulate in the public interest and protect the public.

By incorporating public input, the Fellowship is committed to using data-driven insights to strengthen the College’s regulatory practices, promote high professional standards among licensees and increase public awareness of the value of licensed immigration consultants.

Our First Study

Supported by 2 Mitacs Accelerate grants received in 2024 and 2025, the College’s first study aims to:

  • Investigate the impact of unethical practices by unauthorized practitioners on international students in public colleges in Ontario and British Columbia.
  • Examine strategies and policies public colleges use to engage with licensed immigration consultants.
  • Explore how colleges plan to align programs with labour market needs and establish career support that helps international students join the Canadian workforce.

This study is being conducted in collaboration with the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) Migration at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and the Professional Standards, Research, Education and Policy (PREP) department at the College.

The research is jointly supervised by Marshia Akbar, PhD, Research Area Lead on Labour Migration, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration Program at TMU and Beata Pawlowska, PhD, Director, Professional Standards, Research, Education and Policy at the College.
